Pai Gow Poker Terms

One of the most basic rules that gamblers should remember before beginning a new gambling activity is to learn the terminology applicable to that game.   Many gamblers may feel that ‘poker is poker’ and they are quite familiar with all the words and terms surrounding this exciting gambling pastime.  However, a closer look shows that each poker game is unique – not only in terms of rules and strategies, but also with regards to the terminology used.

If players want to succeed in Pai Gow poker – or any casino game for that matter – they need to become familiar with the terminology and what these words and phrases mean.  Taking time to read up about Pai Gow poker and getting to know what everything refers to, will save you time, money and frustration in the long run.

Specific Pai Gow Terms

Dragon: A second hand that the gambler may choose to play, also considered a bonus bet.  The Dragon differs from casino to casino and may either be a community hand or an option that each player is offered in turn.

Five of a Kind: the highest-ranking poker hand in Pai Gow.  A Five of a Kind could consist of four aces and a joker.

Flush: a hand in Pai Gow.  A Flush consists of cards that are all from the same suit.

Foul Hand: A high hand (five cards) with a lower ranking than a low hand (two cards).  In this case, the player will be encouraged to choose an alternative two-card hand.

Four of a Kind: a hand in Pai Gow.  A Four of a Kind consists of four cards of the same denomination, all from a different suit.  An example of this hand might be a ten of spades, a ten of hearts, a ten of diamond and a ten of clubs.

Full House: a hand in Pai Gow.  A Full House consists of three cards that make up one denomination and two cards from another denomination.  An example of this hand may be an eight of spades, hearts and diamonds and a queen of clubs and diamonds.

High Hand: a five-card hand.  Seven-card hands must be set into two hands in Pai Gow Poker.  One of them is the high hand.   This hand should rank higher than the two-card (low) hand.

House: incorporates the dealer, management of casino, etc.   In Pai Gow poker, if both dealers hands are winners then the house wins.

Joker: In Pai Gow, the Joker serves as a wild card and can be used in straight flushes, straights and flushes.  It can also be used as an ace.

Low Hand: a two-card hand.  Seven-card hands must be set into two hands in Pai Gow Poker.  One of them is the low hand

No Pair: the lowest ranking hand in Pai Gow poker.  The No Pair hand consists of five unmatched cards of different rank and different suit.

One Pair: a hand in Pai Gow.  A One Pair hand consists of one set from the same denomination and three cards not matched.

Push: This is a tie hand between the gambler and the dealer.  Both hold a combination of winning and losing hands and no money is won or lost in this hand.

Royal Flush: a poker hand in Pai Gow.  The Royal Flush consists of a ten, a jack, a queen, a king and an ace - all from the same suit.

Set: This is when the dealt hand is separated into a two-card hand and five-card hand.

Split: When the dealt hand is set into separate hands of two and five cards.

Straight: a hand in Pai Gow.  The Straight can consist of any five cards in sequence from any suit.

Straight Flush: a hand in Pai Gow.  The Straight Flush consists of five cards in a sequence and all from the same suit.   An example of this hand might be the five, six, seven, eight and nine of hearts.

Three of a Kind: a hand in Pai Gow.  The Three of a Kind consists of three cards that are from the same denomination and another two cards that are not matched.

Two Pairs: a hand in Pai Gow.  A hand of Two Pairs consists of any two sets from the same denomination and a random fifth card.

Wager: a bet.  In Pai Gow poker, players place a wager against the banker (represented by the dealer).

Conclusion:

Whether players are familiar with basic poker terms or whether they have already played Pai Gow poker in traditional or online casinos, they should never stop reading and learning more about the game.  In the long run, knowledge is power and if players are familiar and feel at home with the specific terminology used in Pai Gow, it will only contribute to a greater all-round gambling session and increased success.   Good luck!
